All conversations about photography always involve a discussion about equipment at some stage….usually sooner rather than later!

Historically most photographers choose between a Canon or a Nikon based system, although the options are increasing these days.

I started out with Canon and have stuck with them.  Most of my wildlife photographs have been taken with the following set up:

Canon 1D Mark IV

Canon 500mm F4

Canon 1.4x Teleconverter

Canon 580 EX II Speedlite

Better Beamer

Gitzo GT3540XLS Tripod

Arca-Swiss monoball Z and Wimberley Sidekick

Gura Gear Kiboko 30L to carry it all in

I used to be hung up a lot more about equipment when I was first starting out but I now believe an appreciation and knowledge of nature is the most important factor when trying to get good wildlife photographs.

That said, there are things that make a wildlife photographers job easier and  they will be the subject of future posts.
